Chanel Grand Shopping Tote: The Big Shopping Tote Sister

The Chanel grand shopping tote, also called the GST, is equally famous as the Chanel classic flap bag. Its fame starts in the United States, going all the way to Europe, Africa to China and Japan. This bag represents the brand Chanel and is considered one of the hottest bags in fashion, the ‘it’ of the ‘it’ bags. But that doesn’t surprise me; everything that you need in a tote, the GST has it and so much more. The durable caviar leather, large enough to pack your modern essentials and even your summer jacket, stylish enough to make your girlfriends jealous and durable enough to love it forever.

There are several choices you need to make when it comes to the GST: the color, the hardware and the leather. The GST is available in gold hardware as well as silver hardware. And there are several colors to choose; of course the classic black, quilted red, beige, chalk white, blue, gold, yellow, red and even gray. But it doesn’t mean that you can just enter the Chanel boutique and go home with whatever style you want. These bags are limited and your favorite choice might not be available in stock.

Then you have the leather, it’s available in metallic, patent, lambskin and caviar. The most famous choice is the GST in black and lambskin/caviar. But that’s no surprise, it’s the same choice you would make picking your first Chanel classic flap bag.

Since 2010, Chanel has reissued the GST (just a couple of modifications to make it better). There’s a new strap with key hook inside; you can use it to attach anything you like, keys, wallet or even your iPad. The interior has changed too; Chanel has used thicker lining comparable to the Ottoman lining. Some people claim that the older lining was much better, more durable and less easy to abuse. The new lining, Satin seems to be much more difficult to maintain.

If you have a hard time of gather money to buy your first Chanel classic flap bag, your dream bag, then consider the GST. It’s as useful as the classic flap and much bigger. The price is much lower too, which means you get a great value for money. But you really want to stick with the classic flap or the reissue 2.55, Chanel PST, Chanel GST and even to the Cerf tote to make sure you have a Chanel classic in your wardrobe.

  1. Hi,

Would appreciate if someone can advise me on Chanel PST’s availability in Europe? Ill be travelling to Italy and London this dec and i made a call recently to a few boutiques in London to check on the PST but was told by the SAs they do not have them anymore. I need to know if Italy carries them cause i really dont want to come home empty handed. Thanks!

    • Hi Nur, you should get a back-up plan, a second choice, because the PST do exist, only its seasonal. And nobody knows which boutique has stock.

  2. Hi, would like to ask a few questions and hope someone can enlighten me 🙂

    1) Is it easy to find Chanel GST Beige Clair GHW in any Chanel stores in Italy and Paris? I will be going to Milan, Florence, Venice, Rome and Paris.

    2) Italy has the highest VAT refund right, which means I should get it in Italy than Paris?

    3) What do you think of Saint Laurent Classic Monogram Shopping tote? Saint Laurent or Chanel GST better?

    Thank you !!

    • Hi Wen,

1). This really depends on the stock, nobody can tell. You can call the Chanel boutique to check the stock.
2). This is correct, however, I wouldn’t bet on the country, but if you can find the bag you want, then you should just buy it.
3). This bag is also very nice, but its not as famous as the GST.

      Does this help?
