formulating a response

The second they finish speaking we jump in with what we think is a valid, appropriate response. Our quick response is further fueled by our perceptions and biases as we attempt to decode their message. When you jump in with your quick response, it clearly communicates to the sender that you were not listening, that you were more concerned with your reply rather than understanding the message. It can be very frustrating and irritating when you know the listener is not paying attention and is preoccupied with formulating a response. Listening is a lot easier when you like the person and agree with the message.

awnings of the main street

‘I’ve seen your signs,’ Simms said. “Workers! America Is the Richest Country in the World Yet a Third of Us Are Starving. When Will We Unite and Demand Our Share?”—all that. Your signs are radical. I wouldn’t let you use my chalk.’ But I don’t plan to write signs.’ All was so hushed and still that Jake paused for a moment to sniff the air and look around him. Then he grasped his suitcase under his arm and began to run toward the awnings of the main street. But he was not quick enough. There was one metallic crash of thunder and the air chilled suddenly.

high and low estimates of the total fees

Once you have chosen a lawyer and agreed on a payment method, get an agreement in writing. You will protect both yourself and your lawyer by putting on paper what the lawyer has agreed to do, how he or she will charge, how expenses will be covered, what kind of itemized bills you will receive, and how any disputes will be settled. Also, try to obtain a written estimate of how much the lawyer thinks your case will cost. You might have him or her give you high and low estimates of the total fees, depending on how much time is involved and the complexity of the case. If you finally find a lawyer you like and trust but cannot pay his or her fees in a lump sum, ask whether the lawyer offers a payment plan. Many even take credit cards.

skeptical of these illustrations

When the agent explains these alternatives, he or she will usually use policy illustrations, which are columns of numbers that project what your life insurance could be worth in 5, 10, 20, and 30 years, under certain conditions. Be skeptical of these illustrations because the underlying assumptions may not hold true. For example, a policy might project how dramatically your cash value will grow if you earn 10 percent a year for the life of the policy. But if interest rates drop, you might not earn anywhere near 10 percent, and the pie-in-the-sky figures at the bottom of the columns of numbers will never be reached.

Can I work out some kind of continuing relationship with the company if I take the package? Do I really have a choice? Even if the incentive package is officially considered voluntary, you may feel that you really have little choice but to accept the offer. For example, you might be threatened with a layoff if you don’t accept the package. Or your employer may offer a small window of eligibility, which pressures you to accept. However, you cannot be forced out of your job purely because of your age, according to the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) of 1967.

something shameful and sullen

He began whistling a song and got up from the table. Funny to spot it in other people, though. They helped Blount to his feet. He teetered weakly. He was not crying any more, but he seemed to be brooding on something shameful and sullen. Biff went with them to the entrance. ‘Buck up and keep your nose clean,’ he said to Blount. The black night sky was beginning to lighten and turn a deep blue with the new morning. The street was empty, silent, almost cool. Singer carried the suitcase with his left hand, and with his free hand he supported Blount.

kind of singing moan

Portia held all of their hands together. ‘Us just can’t afford to quarrel.’ He got up suddenly and turned on the light. When he read the Spinoza aloud to himself the words had a rich, dark sound. He thought of the white man of whom they had spoken. It would be good if the white man could help him with Augustus Benedict Mady Lewis, the new things about music. It would be good to write to the white man even if he did not have this reason and these questions to ask. Doctor Copeland held his head in his hands and from his throat there came the strange sound like a kind of singing moan. He remembered the white man’s face when he smiled behind the yellow match flame on that rainy night—and peace was in him.
